JAGO COMMUNITY (Completed)

Jago, Mississippi is one of the oldest incorporated areas that eventually became part of the City of Southaven.  The Jago Community was established by emancipated blacks following the Civil War.  The community was named after DeSoto County socialite, Dr. Abraham L. Jagoe.  During its zenith, Jago boasted its own post office, school, cotton gin, and general store.  Comparable to majority black communities like Mound Bayou, Mississippi, Jago represents a key piece of “Americana”.
